About the artist
An emerging global artist, Gus is an Illinois native from the heart of the American Midwest. He has traveled extensively during his twenty three years in the US Navy and studied under Charles Kello and Kenneth Bain in the seaport town of Norfolk, Virginia. Their intuitive use of negative space, color and light continues to influence Gus's interpretation of people and places from his personal experiences in Africa, Europe and Asia.
Gus brings a new eye to the islands. His initial Hawaii paintings include representational landscapes that offer a unique departure from the idealized beachscapes that often characterize island art. His still life of Maui onions and a lively street scene from Honolulu's Chinatown round out his current work and provide insight into his new interpretations of life in the islands.
